Cheap Wedding Dresses

The idea of cheap wedding dresses may not be romantic, but a thrifty bride can save a great deal of money to spend on their new home or the honeymoon.

I have never understood why many brides want to go into debt to buy an expensive wedding dress they will only ever wear once.

There are many affordable wedding dresses that can be uncovered with a little investigation.

Some of the options for cheap wedding dresses are obvious while others are rarely used today.

A little planning will help you find quite a few cheap wedding dresses to choose from. An obvious place used to be to look in your grandmother or mother’s attic.

Cheap Wedding Dresses

Many women used to wear a gown that was handed down from a previous generation.

Some how today, this tradition is no longer observed, perhaps due to our greater affluence, or perhaps because we feel there is some sort of social stigma attached to anything used.

Of course, so many women are conditioned by the fashion industry to wear only the latest fashions, that wearing a wedding dress from the 1970's would seem unthinkably old fashioned.

Yet, if you wait long enough, what was out of fashion comes back into fashion. Take platform shoes, pointed toe shoes, and flared trousers. These were all fashionable in the 1970's and have all come back into fashion again in the past two years.

So as surprising as it may seem, a new fashionable wedding dress that you see in the shops today, could actually be a design that was first seen back in the 1960's, 70's or 80's.

Since wedding gowns don't have much resale value, the thrifty bride could well find she can pick up what appears to be a currently fashionable wedding dress by shopping for cheap wedding dresses from thirty, forty, or more years ago. See also Vintage Wedding Dresses.

Older gowns are generally of greater quality

Older gowns were generally of greater quality and can be cleaned and restored at very little cost.

It's therefore possible to find cheap wedding dresses from the past, that look top-dollar and fashionable whilst at the same time you don't need a second mortgage to buy.

If there are no acceptable hand-me-down vintage wedding dresses in your family, you can still buy cheap wedding dresses through a consignment shop.

Consignment shops usually offer superior quality and have wedding dresses that are professionally restored and cleaned.

Designer gowns are often sold as cheap wedding dresses to consignment stores, so it's a good place to find excellent quality at a low price. Remember also that you may find that many of these cheap wedding dresses were never worn.

My sister-in-law once bought a $1500 wedding dress for a forth coming marriage that never happened. Eventually she sold the wedding dress she never wore to a shop, for about 5% of what she had paid for it.

I realize that the idea of wearing a used wedding gown will not appeal to most brides, especially for fear of being ridiculed by some people.

However with careful planning and strict secrecy that is often accepted whilst planning a wedding, no one need know where you got the dress from or how much you paid for it.

Whether you want a brand new gown or whether you want to restore a vintage wedding dress, the choice is yours. Just because you're looking for cheap wedding dresses doesn't mean you'll end up looking like you're wearing a cheap wedding dress.
